Section outline

  • Geometry begins with simple ideas: points, lines, angles, and shapes. In this chapter, you will learn the basic language of geometry and explore how mathematicians use careful definitions to describe the world around us.

You will investigate polygons and polyhedra, use a straightedge and compass to create geometric constructions, and consider why observations and measurements alone are not enough to prove that something is always true. These ideas prepare you for the reasoning and proofs in Chapter 2.

    Your Pace

Plan for 9 focused work sessions, usually spread over two weeks.

    Work at a Focused Pace

This schedule is a suggested pace, not a set of deadlines. Aim for no more than about one hour of math in a day. Stop when you can no longer concentrate well, even if the lesson is not finished. If a lesson takes more than one work session, simply continue during your next session.
