Finding a possible answer is not the end of solving an equation—the value must also make the original equation true. Sometimes the solving process produces an extraneous solution, a value that appears to work but fails when checked.

You may have encountered this in the exploratory problems from the previous lesson. Today, you will learn why extraneous solutions occur and then carry that habit of careful checking into your work with inequalities.

Warm-Up — Do These Quickly

Complete Lesson 1-6’s Do These Quickly: Q1–Q10 in your notebook. Spend no more than five minutes. If you get stuck, skip the problem and check the solution afterward.

Begin with the brief video about extraneous solutions. Focus on the difference between a possible solution and a solution that has been verified.

Then, complete A2T 1-6: Inequalities in Amplify.

Keep your notebook open and work through the examples as you go.

Notes

Before moving on, make sure your notes include:

  • a definition of an extraneous solution;
  • an example showing how one is identified; and
  • the important inequality rules and examples from Amplify.

These notes will support the textbook work in the next lesson.
