Chapter 1: Basic Operations
Section outline
-

Imagine trying to describe a pattern without knowing the exact numbers yet. How many slices if each person gets the same amount? How many tiles if the room gets bigger? How many steps if the pattern keeps going? Algebra begins with that kind of thinking. It gives you a way to talk about quantities that can change while the relationships between them stay steady.
Along the way, you will think about the natural order of operations, the unusual roles of zero and one, and even the idea of distributing pizzas as a way to understand distributing numbers.
Exploring
variables → operations → zero & one → exponents → order of operations → distributive property
Your Pace
Plan for 12 focused work sessions, usually spread over three weeks.

This pacing is a guide, not a deadline. Aim for no more than about one hour of math in a session. Stop when you no longer concentrate well, even if the lesson is not finished. If a lesson takes more than one work session, simply continue during your next session.
Following a two-year pace? Use the 2-Year Pacing Guide in the Course Handbook.
